What is a Kiss of Life and how do you use it?

During CPR, every second can make a difference. In addition to an AED and a well-stocked first aid kit, a Kiss of Life is a useful tool for providing rescue breaths. But what exactly is a Kiss of Life, when should you use it and how do you use it correctly?
This article explains everything you need to know.

What is a Kiss of Life?

A Kiss of Life is a compact CPR face shield with a one-way valve. It creates a barrier between the rescuer and the casualty during mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The valve allows air to flow towards the casualty while preventing saliva, blood and other bodily fluids from flowing back towards the rescuer.

A Kiss of Life is often supplied in a small keyring pouch, making it easy to carry on your keys, in a bag or first aid kit, or alongside an AED.

Why use a Kiss of Life?

Many people feel uncomfortable performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on someone they do not know. A Kiss of Life can lower this barrier by preventing direct contact with the casualty’s mouth and nose.

The main benefits are:

  • A one-way valve prevents saliva and other bodily fluids from flowing back towards the rescuer.
  • Direct contact with the mouth, nose and face is reduced.
  • The transparent material allows you to continue monitoring the colour of the casualty’s lips.
  • It is small and lightweight, making it easy to carry.
  • It is suitable for use with standard CPR techniques.

When should you use a Kiss of Life?

A Kiss of Life is used when rescue breaths are given during CPR. According to CPR guidelines:

  • Trained rescuers should combine chest compressions with rescue breaths.
  • Rescue breaths are particularly important in cases involving children, drowning or choking.
  • If untrained rescuers are unable or unwilling to give rescue breaths, they may perform chest compressions only until professional help arrives.

Unsure about the correct procedure? Always follow the instructions provided by the emergency call handler.

How do you use a Kiss of Life?

A Kiss of Life is easy to use and does not require a different rescue-breathing technique.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the protective pouch and remove the CPR face shield.
  2. Place the shield over the casualty’s mouth. Make sure the one-way valve is positioned directly above the mouth.
  3. Gently tilt the casualty’s head backwards and lift the chin to open the airway.
  4. Pinch the nose closed and give a normal rescue breath through the valve.
  5. Check whether the chest rises.
  6. Resume chest compressions in accordance with the applicable CPR guidelines.

If an AED is available, use it as soon as possible during resuscitation.

Is a Kiss of Life mandatory?

No, a Kiss of Life is not mandatory. However, it is a valuable addition to any first aid kit or AED set. Its compact size means it takes up very little space and can always be kept close at hand in case of an emergency.

A small investment with significant benefits

A Kiss of Life is a simple tool that can contribute to safer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. It is a practical addition for workplace first aiders, trained first aiders, sports clubs, businesses and individuals who want to be prepared for an emergency.

By keeping a Kiss of Life available alongside an AED and a first aid kit, you will be better prepared to provide first aid quickly and responsibly.
